2005 Holwick vacation to the Southwest, page 4

Grand Gulch, premier Ancient Puebloan (Anasazi) ruins.  An official wilderness area below Blanding, Utah.  We went down into Todie Canyon, through to Green Mask spring, and out through Sheiks Canyon.

It was too cloudy to look at stars so we sat around a campfire.

Before doing into the canyon we explored its mesa.  Numerous granaries and dwellings were built into a nearby outcropping.  A trail along the canyon edge gives great views of the sheer walls below and we spied several villages.

There is one main route from Todie mesa down into the canyon and many helpful cairns guide the way.  Too many, in fact.  We hiked right past the trail and kept going until Daniel oriented us according to the topographical map.  It was a tight squeeze getting down...

We found many friends in the canyon.  Here is one of them that David
almost stepped on.

At the bottom of the Todie trail there is a nice panel of petroglyphs.  Many of them have stylized human shapes. Josiah gives some scale to their size.

The picture on the right gives an idea of the rugged terrain hikers have to deal with.  The vegetation was especially thick - in some places almost impenetrable.  Not what you would expect of a desert environment (and far thicker than what we encountered on our last trip here.)
