II. The coming of the Spirit at Pentecost.

      A. Setting of the event:

          1) Pentecost was a harvest celebration of firstfruits.

          2) Many Jewish pilgrims from all over the world came.

          3) Christians were gathered in upper room.

      B. What happened:

          1) It was 9:00 a.m.                             Acts 2:15

          2) There was a sound like a violent wind.       Acts 2:2

              a) The Spirit is often compared with the wind (same word).

          3) Tongues of fire rested on each disciple.     Acts 2:3

              a) Jesus baptizes in "Spirit and fire".

          4) The disciples were filled with the Spirit.

          5) They spoke in tongues (or languages).

III. The nature of tongues.

      A. Each of the disciples spoke in a tongue.          Acts 2:4

          1) The ability was not natural, but Spirit-enabled.   Acts 2:4

          2) The words were praises of God (not messages from Him)   2:11

      B. Those in the crowd understood their own language.      Acts 2:8

          1) Other languages would have sounded like gibberish, leading

to the impression of drunkenness.           Acts 2:13

          2) They were not sure of the significance of what was happening.

               Acts 2:12

IV. Peter interprets the meaning of the event.

      A. They are not drunk - it is too early.        2:15

      B. Joel predicted it.    (Joel 2:28-32)         2:16

          1) It would occur in "last days."

          2) The Spirit would come on all people.     2:17

              a) Every aspect of society, not just prophets and kings.

              b) The lowest classes, servants, are also included.

          3) The evidence of the Spirit: prophecy, visions, dreams.

          4) The Spirit will be accompanied by heavenly signs.  2:19

              a) Lunar eclipse in AD 33?

          5) Salvation will be available.                       2:21

      C. Jesus Christ has the Spirit, gives it to us.           2:33

          1) Jesus is therefore Lord and Christ.                2:36

          2) Repentance (and baptism) comes before the gift of the Spirit.

          3) It is available to everyone, everyplace, of all generations.
