THE FUTURE OF THE PLANET EARTH


I. The Future.

     A. Graduates wonder about it.

         1) What will you do:

             a) College

             b) Job

             c) Spouse    (In the meantime, lots of parties)

         2) What will happen to you:

             a) First million dollars

             b) Happy at job, marriage?


     B. Disciples wondered about it - earth's final destiny.

         1) Question - When will it happen?   (Matt 24:3)

             a) Eternal question.  (Nuclear scientists' Doomsday clock)

             b) Important - human destiny depends on it.

         2) Question - What will be sign?

             a) Must study carefully.

             b) Must be careful - not clear cut.


II. Analysis of past fulfillment.

     A. Growth of Jews.


     B. Fall of Judah.


     C. Survival of Jews.


     D. Coming of Christ.


     E. Kingdom - unfulfilled.


III. Much is still future.

     A. Messiah


     B. World peace


     C. End of suffering


IV. Unfulfilled prophecy that faces us today.  (Last generation?)

     A. Developments in world:

         1) One government (United Nations, Common Market)

         2) One religion (WWC, inclusion of other religions)

         3) One leader (Antichrist)

             a) Power, military might

             b) Manipulation

             c) Demand of allegiance, worship


     B. Unifying trends do not bring solutions.  Trouble intensifying.

         1) Conflict between nations.

         2) Natural disasters.


     C. Church will face hard times.

         1) Falling away:

             a) from truth

             b) from morality

             c) from commitment

         2) Outside pressure

             a) persecution

             b) harder to stand up for Lord - stand out more


     D. Conditions will get worse before they get better.


V. Unfulfilled prophecy holds out ultimate hope.

     A. Second Coming.

         1) Cop out?  Reliance on outside force instead of ourselves?

         2) Simple Bible truth.


     B. New leader

         1) Jesus will be gentle

         2) Perfect statesman


     C. New world

         1) Peace

         2) No hunger, suffering

         3) No differences in politics, religion

         4) Radical changes in natural order


     D. New people

         1) We ourselves will be changed

             a) new bodies

             b) miracle - new characters

                 1> perfect love

                 2> no sin  (Greatest miracle, and need, of all)

         2) The change will be permanent.


VI. Unfulfilled prophecy calls for holy living.

     A. Moral imperative, not speculation.
