OVERVIEW OF JESUS' LIFE



I. The phases of Jesus' ministry.

      A. Year of Obscurity, A.D. 27-28.

          1) John the Baptist announces the coming of the Messiah.

          2) Jesus is baptized and tempted.

          3) He calls his first disciples and performs first miracles.

          4) Most of ministry is around Galilee.


      B. Year of Popularity, A.D. 28-29.

          1) Large crowds follow Jesus, with much preaching and miracles.

          2) Popularity reaches its peak with feeding of 5,000.


      C. Year of Rejection, A.D. 29-30.

          1) Jesus withdraws into Phoenicia (Lebanon).

          2) He avoids crowds and concentrates on teaching disciples.

          3) Jesus predicts his suffering and death.

          4) He begins his last journey to Jerusalem.

          5) The raising of Lazarus from dead convinces Jewish Sanhedrin to eliminate him.


      D. The Passion Week.

          1) Palm Sunday:  triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

          2) Monday:       fig tree cursed and temple cleansed.

          3) Tuesday:      debate with Jews and sermon on prophecy.

          4) Wednesday:    (silent)

          5) Thursday:     Last Supper, followed by illegal midnight trial.

          6) Friday:       Crucifixion and burial.

          7) Saturday:     Roman guards watch tomb.

          8) Sunday:       Resurrection and appearances of Jesus.


II. The content of his teaching.

      A. Jesus built upon Old Testament belief in one righteous and loving God.


      B. He drew unique attention to himself by forgiving sins and making grand claims,

         even to being divine himself.


      C. Jesus taught that God was much more personal than the Jews believed, summed up

         in called God "abba" (Daddy).


      D. The two main ethic commands are to love God with your whole heart and your

         neighbor as yourself.


      E. The Kingdom of God has dawned, and Jesus represents it.  He predicted his

         suffering, death and return (Second Coming) and saw it all in terms of Old

         Testament prophecy.
