Joshua faced challenges but he was spiritual and competent. The importance of a positive attitude is stressed. Joshua 2:1-14 "Rahab: A Good Prostitute" Rahab was a prostitute and an outcast, but correctly believed in the God of Israel. Focus is on the morality of her lie and the covenant nature of her salvation, including family salvation. Joshua 3:1-14 "Moving Out: Crossing the Jordan" As Israel entered the Promised Land it discovered God can act in powerful ways, and we need to remind ourselves of this. Believers can use religious rituals to reinforce their faith. Joshua 6:12-20 "Your Walls Can Tumble Down" Like Joshua at Jericho, believers often face what seem like insurmountable problems. With God's help we can overcome them. Joshua 6:17-21 "Holy Violence" Violence in Bible is a stumbling block for many people. Sermon puts it in perspective of God's holy judgment on sinful society. Christian warfare" uses weapons of love and compassion. Joshua 7:19-26 "Achan: One Person, One Sin" Israel faced defeat because of the sin of a single person, Achan. God takes sin seriously and so should believers. Five principles on sin from the episode are given. Joshua 9:3-16 "Gibeonites - Conning Your Way to God" The Gibeonites were deceptive, but their shrewdness resulted in their salvation. Christians also need to be shrewd - and to rely on God for direction. Joshua 20:2-9 "A Place to Hide" Israelites had Cities of Refuge for those who had innocently taken another's life. Sermon brings out some parallels with Jesus as our place of refuge, and the church as a refuge for sinners and outcasts. Joshua 23:1-6 "Hold Fast, Hold True" Joshua's last words to the Israelite leaders reveal principles from which all believers can benefit. Special emphasis is given to the concept of the promises of God. Joshua 24:15-27 "The Ultimate Choice" Joshua's challenge to the Israelites to choose God. We face many choices in life but the greatest choice involves salvatation. Choose God in your life and encourage your family to choose him as well.
