Philippians 1:1-6

"What's To Be Happy About?"

Introduction to Philippians. Paul had many hardships in life but he writes this letter with an overwhelming sense of joy.

Philippians 1:7-11

"Love Like Jesus"

Christian love is reciprocal, abounding, inclusive, knowledgeable and moral.

Philippians 1:12-19

"Making the Best of the Worst"

Paul is stuck in prison while others try to steal his glory by evangelizing. Motives matter, but we should focus on the ultimate goal and not our opponents.

Philippians 1:20-26

"I'd Rather Be Dead"

Many people in our culture have a morbid fear of death. To a Christian, death is wonderful just as life is wonderful. What is our personal perspective on life and death?

Philippians 1:27 - 2:4

"United We Stand"

Christians need to stand firm in their faith and stand united with other believers. Principles for enhancing unity are given, and things to avoid (selfishness).

Philippians 2:5-11

"Every Knee Shall Bow"

Jesus stooped down to become a human (and a despised one at that) but his victory exalts him to the Lord of the universe. Someday every creature will have to acknowledge this. Concludes with a challenge to make Jesus your Lord in everyday life.

Philippians 2:12-13

"Ya Gotta Work At It"

Most people take a "works" approach to getting into heaven. The Bible presents a grace approach, through our faith in Jesus. But grace doesn't mean we slack off. God has a part in changing us, and we have a part in changing us.

Philippians 2:14-18

"Whine or Shine"

Churches are filled with grumps and complainers. Always have been. We need to watch our own attitude and have a positive spirit. Positive people shine.

Philippians 2:19-30

"Real Men Love Jesus"

Timothy sets the example as a caring and spiritual Christian man. He was consistent, cooperative, committed and courageous. The church needs men like him, today.

Philippians 2:25-30

"Does God Have to Heal?"

Looks at divine healing in the Bible and modern life. God can heal, he can even heal miraculously, but it is not an automatic guarantee. Only in heaven do we receive complete healing.

Philippians 3:1-11

"Where Is Your Confidence?"

Many people look to their stuff and status to gain confidence. Christians have confidence because of our relationship to Jesus, not through legalism. We have to decide what really matters in life.

Philippians 3:12-14

"Forget and Press"

Paul compares the Christian life to a race. Forget the past (whether it was good or bad) and focus on the future. We have a goal to strive toward.

Philippians 3:15-21

"Marks of Maturity"

Nobody is perfect but there are people we can emulate. In fact, all of us are examples to others whether we want to be, or not. We can learn important lessons from bad examples, especially those who are slaves of appetites.

Philippians 4:1-7

"How To Handle Stress"

Christians need to get along with others, have a joyous attitude, worry about nothing and pray about everything. This kind of attitude will surround us with peace. A great passage to preach on.

Philippians 4:8-9

"As You Think, So You Are"

Our mental attitude has a powerful effect on our life. It can put us in a downward spiral or an upward spiral. Paul gives eight qualities of positive thinking. Mental discipline and a commitment to integrity are essential for believers.

Philippians 4:10-13

"Are You Satisfied With Your Life?"

Many people are discontented and cope by withdrawing. Christians do not resort to stoicism but allow God to counteract the world's pressure on us. We can adapt to change and experience the peace of God.

Philippians 4:14-23

"Sharing and Caring"

God's hands are usually our hands. We need to share with those in need. Sharing is not a one-way street but has reciprocal benefits. God can miraculously supply our needs, but a sharing lifestyle is not always painless.
