Extract References

One of the most powerful features of the Kerux2010 database is the way records are tied to Bible verses.  It is always a good idea to type key Bible verses related to a record in the Text field.  The Specific Search function usually focuses on this.  However, the Broad Search function adds Scriptures that are quoted or referred to in the record but not listed in the Text field.  For this to happen, the record has to have those references extracted first and this is what the Extract References function does.

There are three ways to utilize the Extract References function.  Since the function takes a fair amount of time, we recommend the first option:

1. Use the Extract References form at Main Menu > Maintenance > Extract Resources.  Large numbers of records can be done at once, and you can limit the extraction by date or resource number. (recommended)

2. Use the Extract Refs button on the Resources Form below "Simple View".

3. Set the Reference Extraction function to operate automatically whenever a record is modified.  Note that this can slow down the task of working on records considerably.  You set this at Main Menu > Maintenance > Kerux Options.  Check the box that says "Extract Searchable References from Resources Fields after each field is updated..."

The Extract References function does not work perfectly.  It misinterprets some references and may create mythical references.  It also generates a large number of secondary references that may overwhelm your searching.  But sometimes it may ferret out just the record you are looking for.
